Melasma (Hyperpigmentation)

What is Melasma?
Melasma is a common skin condition causing dark, discolored patches, primarily on sun-exposed areas of the face (cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and chin). It is often triggered by hormonal shifts (such as pregnancy or birth control) and accelerated by ultraviolet (UV) rays and visible light.

Daily Foundations (Non-Negotiable First Steps): No treatment will work without strict photoprotection.

Tinted Sunscreen (SPF 50+): Standard clear sunscreens block UV rays, but tinted sunscreens containing iron oxide are required to block high-energy visible (HEV) blue light, which also triggers melasma flares.

Sun Protection Habits: Wear wide-brimmed hats, seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.

Hormonal Evaluation: If possible, discuss alternative non-hormonal options with your doctor if oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapies are triggering flares.
